Phuket has a reputation problem when it comes to families. Say the name and people picture Patong's neon strip, and yes, that part of the island is best avoided if you're travelling with young children. But Phuket is far bigger and more varied than its loudest neighbourhood suggests, and there are hotels here that make travelling with kids genuinely easy. The trick is picking the right coast.
Choose Your Beach First, Hotel Second
I always tell parents to decide on a beach before they fall in love with a room. The northern beaches — Nai Yang, Mai Khao and Bang Tao — are calmer, greener and a short hop from the airport, which is a gift when you're wrangling tired toddlers off a long-haul flight. Kata and Karon in the south have gentle swimming and a friendly, low-key strip of restaurants that suit families well. Save the busier spots for a solo trip.
Hotels That Deliver
The best all-rounder for me is a large resort on Bang Tao beach with a lazy river, a supervised kids' club and family suites big enough that nobody's tripping over a travel cot. It isn't cheap, but the sheer amount of on-site activity means you rarely need to leave, which cuts down on taxi costs and meltdowns alike. For something quieter, a boutique property near Nai Yang offers pool-access rooms and a lovely shallow beach where the water stays waist-deep for a long way out. And for value, there's a well-run mid-range hotel just back from Kata beach with connecting rooms and a breakfast spread that keeps fussy eaters happy.
What these hotels share is space, shade and staff who don't blink when a four-year-old wants plain rice for dinner three nights running.
Small Details That Make a Big Difference
Look for a hotel with a shaded, fenced children's pool separate from the main pool — it changes the whole rhythm of a day. Ask whether they can provide a cot, high chair and bed rail in advance rather than assuming, and check how far the nearest pharmacy and convenience store are, because you will need one at 9pm eventually. If you're visiting in the wetter months from May onwards, a resort with plenty of indoor and covered space is worth paying a little extra for.
Get those pieces lined up and Phuket turns out to be one of the easiest places in the region to holiday with children — sunny, safe and set up for exactly this kind of trip.
