Jungle Villas in Ubud: A Family Guide

Private jungle villa in Ubud with a pool surrounded by rainforest

There's a particular kind of holiday photo that sends parents straight to the booking button: a private pool jutting out over a wall of green, mist rising off the treetops, not another building in sight. Ubud's jungle villas deliver exactly that — but staying in the rainforest with children takes a little more thought than the brochure suggests. Here's how to choose one that works for the whole family.

What a Jungle Villa Really Means

Most of these villas sit on the steep ravines that ring the village of Ubud, tucked into valleys where rivers cut through the forest. That setting is the whole appeal, but it also means stairs — sometimes a lot of them — between the road, the villa and the pool. If you're travelling with a baby, a grandparent, or anyone who'd rather not tackle 40 steps in the heat several times a day, ask for a floor plan and a straight answer about access before you book. The best family-friendly jungle villas keep the main living space, pool and bedrooms on one or two levels.

Safety Without Killing the Magic

An open-edge pool over a jungle drop is stunning and, for a toddler, a genuine hazard. I always ask whether the pool can be fenced during our stay, or whether there's a shallow step or beach entry rather than a sheer edge. Many villas will happily fit a temporary barrier if you request it in advance. It's also worth checking the railings on any elevated decks, and whether the villa comes with staff on site during the day — most do, and having a housekeeper or cook around adds a quiet layer of reassurance.

The Villas I'd Book With Kids

I lean towards two- and three-bedroom villas with a private cook, because dinner in the jungle after dark is far easier than driving winding roads back into town with sleepy children. Look for one with a covered living area — afternoon downpours are frequent and dramatic, and kids love watching a storm roll through when they're dry and cosy. A villa with a small lawn or flat garden area is gold, giving little ones somewhere to burn off energy that isn't the pool.

Choose carefully and a jungle villa becomes the highlight of the whole trip: monkeys in the trees at breakfast, fireflies at dusk, and the sort of deep quiet that's almost impossible to find at home. It's slow travel at its best, and children take to it far more naturally than you'd expect.
